King Abdulaziz Public Transportation System (Metro train /Bus) in Riyadh

On 02 Jumada, 1433 H, the Cabinet approved implementation of a multi-phase Public Transportation System (Metro/bus) for Riyadh. A higher committee has been established to oversee its implementation. The government of the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques awarded $22.5 billion worth of contracts to three consortiums, led by major world manufacturers and vendors of metro systems, to design and implement the first metro system in the Riyadh metropolis. The giant, five-year project will signal the most profound shift in domestic transportation in the history of the country.

The project’s purpose is to reduce traffic and boost economic activity in the Riyadh metropolis. The system will enter service by 2018 and consists of 87 stations on six lines, with a total length of 176 km. Driverless, remotely controlled trains will be used. It will be the world’s largest public transportation system developed to date and is designed to carry 1.16 million passengers per day at the start of operation. Capacity will be increased to 3.6 million passengers per day within a decade.
On July 28th, 2013 the first steps were taken. HRH Prince Khaled bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Development of Riyadh, who is also chairman of the project’s steering committee, sponsored the inauguration celebration, which was attended by a large local and international audience.
