The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, HRH King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz officially opened this international research university offering post-graduate studies on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009. KAUST is envisaged as starting a new era of scientific achievement in the Kingdom, to the benefit of the region and the world. The University is supported by a healthy endowment of several billion dollars and is governed by a permanent and independent Board of Trustees and it welcomes eligible men and women from all over the world. KAUST seeks to implement research in strategic disciplines focusing on areas of science and technology of specific interest to the Kingdom, as well as to the region and the world, namely: natural resources, energy, the environment, bioengineering, engineering and material science, applied mathematics and computer science. The University has established multi-disciplinary research centers to support these disciples and grants degrees in 11 fields. The main campus occupies an area of more than 36 million square meters in Thuwal, along the Red Sea Coast, about 80 kilometers north of Jeddah.
