Over-consumption of electricity in Saudi Arabia is attributed mainly to lack of
rationalization awareness. The housing sector consumes approximately 53% of the total
production of electricity. Most of this consumption is due to non-rationalized and
substandard A/C units. There are 20 million A/C units that consume more than 110,000
Gigawatt hour per year. This figure can be cut by more than 30% if rationalization plans
are followed. Per capita consumption of electricity in Saudi Arabia is 8.23 Megawatt hour
per annum, double the the average world consumption.
